Millions of homes across Europe have already switched to air source heat pumps, and they're set to be heating the majority of UK homes within the next decade. If you're still relying on a gas boiler, here's why it might be time to make the switch — and how the government will help pay for it.
An air source heat pump (ASHP) harnesses free, clean thermal energy from the outside air to heat your home. Because it only needs a small amount of electricity to do this, it's up to four times more efficient than a standard gas boiler. That efficiency translates directly into savings: households that switch typically cut their heating costs by 25%, while slashing CO₂ emissions by 75%.
In simple terms, it works a bit like a fridge in reverse — extracting heat from the outdoor air, compressing it to raise its temperature, and releasing that heat into your home before starting the cycle again.
Through the government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme, eligible homeowners can claim one grant per property — up to £7,500 towards the cost of installing an ASHP. The scheme is temporary and currently covers installations completed before March 2028.
