Lower Energy Bills
Heating costs can take up over £750 of your energy bills, EWI dramatically reduces this by up to £400!
Upgrading your home with EWI is one of the most effective ways to reduce heat loss, lower energy bills, and improve comfort. By adding a continuous layer of insulation to the outside of your home, EWI keeps the warmth inside during winter and prevents overheating in summer.
Not only does EWI boost energy efficiency, but it also refreshes your home’s appearance, with a variety of high-quality finishes available—from modern textured renders to classic brick effects.

The UK government has offered a grant as a part of an energy obligation, to be fulfilled by the end by the 31st of March 2026. The funding is available to cover the previous forms of insulation mentioned.
You may be eligible for a grant if both the following conditions are true:

EWI installation usually takes 7-10 days. Here's a general overview of the process:
Step 1. Preparation for External Wall Insulation
Before installation, the existing wall surface must be:
Step 2. Insulation Installation
Insulation boards are fixed using one of two methods:
Step 3. Beading Installation
To reinforce the façade, various beading elements are applied using a reinforcing basecoat, including:
Step 4. Reinforcing Basecoat
A reinforcing basecoat is mixed on-site and trowel-applied over the insulation boards to approximately 6mm thickness. A fiberglass mesh is embedded into the basecoat, with:
Step 5. The Final Finish
Once the reinforcing basecoat has fully dried (typically up to 72 hours), the surface is prepared for the chosen finish. Options include:
Each finish provides a durable, weather-resistant, and visually appealing exterior, enhancing both thermal efficiency and aesthetic appeal.
Planning and Building Regulations
If your property is listed or located in a conservation area, you may require Planning Permission before installing External Wall Insulation (EWI). Please note that securing planning consent is the homeowner’s responsibility. We recommend consulting your local planning office for guidance before work begins.
Ventilation Upgrades
To comply with Building Regulations Part F & L, ventilation must be upgraded when installing EWI. This includes:
Maintenance and Upkeep
EWI is a low-maintenance system designed for long-term durability. However, to maintain its appearance and performance, we recommend following these guidelines:
Fixing Items to Your Walls
If you plan to install satellite dishes, gate posts, hanging baskets, or other fixtures after EWI installation, follow these precautions:
Cleaning and Surface Care
Over time, natural weathering may cause dirt buildup or algae growth on the external render. To clean your walls effectively:
Warranties and Guarantees
External Wall Insulation (EWI) is a top-tier solution for boosting your home's energy efficiency. Unlike other methods, EWI is applied to the outside, causing minimal disruption and allowing for maximum insulation thickness. This keeps your walls dry, warm, and prevents condensation or mold. The result? A comfortable home year-round, significantly lower heating bills, a better EPC rating, and potentially increased property value.
Financial assistance in the form of grants or interest-free loans is available from the UK Government, Local Authorities and energy companies for installing EWI. See more here.
Expect to pay £65-£95 per square meter for a standard EWI system (90mm EPS insulation, silicone render on masonry). Thicker insulation and different finishes will increase this.
For general guidance, estimated total costs are:
Small terraced property: £4,000 – £6,000
Average semi-detached: £8,000 – £10,000
Larger detached homes: £12,000 – £14,000+
Note: These are estimates. Due to 2022 price increases and supply issues, actual costs may be higher.
EWI installation time varies by property size, but a typical 3-bedroom semi-detached house usually takes about two weeks. This includes all prep work, system installation, finishing, and drying times.
You can choose from:
Thin coat synthetic finishes: Available in silicone, acrylic, or silicate plasters, offering various colors and textures.
Thick coat mineral renders: Can be finished with dry dash aggregate or scraped back for a textured look.
Natural finishes: Opt for brick slips or brick-effect render.
When selecting a finish, consider your desired texture and color, as well as the durability required for your building's type and use. Your specialist contractor can advise on the best choice for your property.
Note: Changes to your property's exterior may require planning permission.
Boiler flues, Overflows, Gas Lines are extended to accommodate EWI installation.
To prepare for EWI installation, please clear the area around your property (ornaments, garden furniture, flower pots). Keep pets safely away and protect vehicles. Also, ensure water supply access and check for party wall agreements with neighbors, as scaffolding access may be needed.
No, you won't need to leave your home during EWI installation. Since it's applied externally, disruption is minimal, and the inside of your house remains largely unaffected, with no need for redecoration. Your specialist contractor simply needs good exterior access.
